Apple hires THX inventor to run audio division?

Featured, Industry News — By on May 5, 2011 10:03

Although it doesn’t appear to have been announced officially yet, there’s a very strong rumour circulating – started by @leolaporte of TWiT (This week in Technology) – that Apple has secured the services of Tomlinson (‘Tom’) Holman, the inventor of the THX audio system when he was at Lucasfilm, to run its own audio division.

Not only is Tom’s new role great news for Mac, iOS and AppleTV owners, who will presumably enjoy better audio in the future, it also means they will attract similarly skilled audio people into the company to work with him, and that means its new products will sound much better …

Tom currently teaches film sound at the University of Southern California. His book ‘Sound for Film and Television’ is required reading in many college film courses.
